Do Facebook Posts Really Help Generate Business for Small Businesses?

Social media marketing is often hailed as a cornerstone for small business success. Among various platforms, Facebook stands out due to its massive user base and extensive advertising tools. However, the effectiveness of Facebook posts in generating business for small enterprises, particularly in the web design and SEO industry, remains a topic of debate.

The Reality for Web Design and SEO Businesses

As a web design and SEO business, our experience suggests that Facebook posts alone may not significantly drive business growth. The main reasons for this include:

  1. Target Audience Mismatch: Our target audience consists of business owners and decision-makers who often look for web design and SEO services through professional networks and search engines rather than social media.
  2. Engagement Levels: Facebook’s algorithm prioritises posts from friends and family, which means that organic reach for business posts is limited. This results in lower engagement levels unless substantial investment is made in paid promotions.
  3. Content Saturation: The platform is saturated with content, making it challenging for posts to stand out and attract the desired attention.

Industries Where Facebook Posts May Be Effective

Despite our mixed results, there are industries where Facebook posts can indeed help generate business. Some of these include:

    1. Retail and E-commerce: Businesses selling tangible products can benefit from showcasing their items through visually appealing posts and leveraging Facebook’s shopping features.
    2. Food and Beverage: Restaurants, cafes, and food trucks often use Facebook to promote daily specials, events, and customer reviews, which can drive foot traffic and online orders.
    3. Local Services: Local businesses such as plumbers, electricians, and fitness trainers can use Facebook to target a specific geographical area, engaging with the community and building a loyal customer base.
Is It Worth Spending Time on Facebook Posts?

The answer depends on your industry and business goals.

For some businesses, especially those in the service industry like ours, the return on investment (ROI) from Facebook posts may not justify the time and effort. However, for businesses where visual appeal and community engagement are crucial, Facebook can be a valuable tool.

So why do we bother if it doesn’t work?

We write our blogs articles anyway for both our newsletter and to examine things in some depth so a couple of extra minutes to make it into a Facebook post is not a biggie.

Also, it DOES help is in other ways as follows:

    • It helps with our SEO as, although indirect, social signals from Facebook can contribute to your website’s SEO by driving traffic and engagement.
    • When prospective clients are researching us it helps to show we are actively involved in our business. Afterall, if you look at a business’ Facebook page and the last time they posted was 2019 or even last year for that matter, don’t you question their professionalism?
    • It is another way in which we examine topics related to our industry and give our professional opinions on them.
    • And lastly, frankly, so we can investigate subjects like this and place them out there so you can make informed decisions.

On that note, we’re going to be focusing on posting on Linked-In for the next few months to see if that makes any difference to our particular lead generation (which all currently comes from our own SEO and word of mouth). We’ll keep you posted early in 2025 to see what’s happened there! Follow-us on Linked-In if you like and we’ll follow you back.
